Movement is good for the body – that is very well established scientifically. But that does not mean that more exercise is automatically better. In some cases, the opposite can be true.
Physical adaptation – the long-term effect that training creates – does not happen during the exertion itself, but during the recovery phase afterwards. When you train, you apply a biological stress stimulus. Muscle tissue is challenged at a microscopic level, energy stores are depleted and the immune system responds to the load. This is normal and intended. But the body needs time to process that stress, adapt and return stronger. If recovery time is missing, the load accumulates without meaningful adaptation.
In sports physiology, the term overtraining describes a state in which training load repeatedly exceeds the body’s recovery capacity. The possible consequences include reduced performance, higher injury risk, sleep problems, mood changes and elevated cortisol levels – the opposite of what most people hope to achieve with more training.
That does not mean intensive training phases are always wrong. It means that regularity matters more than volume – and that recovery is not a sign of weakness, but a biologically necessary part of progress.
What actually works biologically

It responds to novelty, short-term rewards and emotional state. It is not designed to remain stable for weeks and months at a time. If you wait until you feel motivated before you act, you may find that those moments become less frequent – especially when everyday life is stressful, your energy is already low or the new behaviour has not yet started to produce positive feedback. This may be one of the most common and at the same time most problematic myths. Many people know the feeling: a week is going well. Then comes an evening with too much unhealthy food, a restless night with too little sleep, a day without movement or training – and suddenly it feels as if everything has been lost.
Emotionally, that feeling is understandable. Biologically, however, it is misleading. Your body does not keep a strict daily scorecard. Your body responds to long-term patterns – to what happens repeatedly and most of the time. Adaptive changes that develop over weeks, for example in the cardiovascular system, microbiome or mitochondrial function, are not undone by a single deviation.
What can have real biological consequences is the interpretation of a bad day as a catastrophe. The stress caused by self-criticism is measurable – it can increase cortisol output and contribute to allostatic load.
The most biologically useful response to an off-day is therefore not punishment or self-criticism, but simply continuing. Return to the pattern. Shape the next day as you usually would.
